If anything was possible I would wish for...

Funny how my imagination FLIES with ideas...then stops, "oh noooooo." Then opens again, then closes again. A fantasy begins to form, the POOF! "the voice of reason" makes it disappear.

I get annoyed.

OH, BE QUIET! you naysayer voices inside my head.

So much time is spent in turmoil with the inner-naysayer.
How much freer would I be without it/her/him/them. What would be possible for me if I were free?

And...what would be possible without all those real people out there who seem to always know more than me and make it her/his business to tell me how wrong I am..or how much I don't know...better take this class and get that certificate... THIS is the best book to read and THAT is the best thing to do...I've been doing this for X-many years and therefore....

*sigh*

Why do we create these inner barriers...and why do people become literal barriers?

If anything were possible I would wish for ALL the Naysayers, Critics, and Negative People to ... go away. Join together and have a great time naysaying and criticizing each other...but leave me alone.

I know what I am doing. I am making my own choices for a reason.
If I do not ask, it may mean I am content on my path, EVEN IF it doesn't look right to YOU...it may be the perfect fit for me.

If anything were possible, I would wish for a world (inner and outer) free of Naysayers.

Say I...

Sometimes you just have to drop what you are doing... go do something else!

The 4th of July was coming up fast on the calendar and we realized...we had no plans! So...we found some fun...and had a great day. A drive up to Rock Creek Cafe to eat some barbeque and watch Roni and the Flight perform!

We checked the map to find out where Rock Creek Cafe was....and it was....waaaayyyyyyy out in the middle of...nowhere.

We drove up Hwy 50, through Placerville...and drove through some beautiful countryside.
Then we came upon a single lane bridge that scared the ba-googles out of me. Josh was all serene... "Look at the view from up here..." Me? I was in the fetal position screaming, "JUST DRIVE TO THE OTHER SIDE!"

Yes. Some photographer I am. I should have been aware and appreciative and taking pictures.
Whatever.

Wow. We found Rock Creek Cafe...out there.
To find out more about Rock Creek Cafe (they cater too) go here...

On Sunday...Josh and I, still feeling adventurous, decided to go to the new location of Bows and Arrows. I used to browse through Bows and Arrows when they were on L Street, but I had not been to the new location on 19th.

WOW.

Trisha Rhomberg and Olivia Coelho did a GREAT job with the new space. I think it's a brilliant business move...They still have the vintage clothing and accessories (and some new things) up front...the back of the store is the cafe...and out in the very back is a wonderful patio...

I am incredibly curious as to what some of the other bloggers have posted, but I am holding myself back! Not easy! What will they say? How do they handle this question?

It's a good one!

I think about it. Check my journal...go outside and look at the gorgeous full moon. Feed the stray cat. Check on bread dough rising in the kitchen. I realize...

My answer is simple.

I wish to become the best me that I can be.

And the best me isn't about being an artist, or writer, or [fill in anything]... It is about who I am without all those labels. It has been a difficult week. I didn't always have the best of me showing. I had an evening of "spinning out" as a beloved friend calls it.

But I "spinned out" incredibly well, and then bounced back from it with just as much....energy.

Perhaps this IS the best...I can be horrifying with amazing skill...or make something of incredible beauty...or cook with wild passion. It is all me.

The best of me is about pushing and gusto and reaching and trying and passion...and not worrying about the "right" punctuation.

I wish to become the best me that I can discover....and it will take my entire lifetime.

"The Artists' Way" and "Vein of Gold", by Julia Cameron, introduces us to the practice of Morning Pages: to begin your day by writing...BY HAND... three pages of dumping out mind chatter. Ok...that is definitely MY definition!

I did pages for awhile while reading The Artists' Way...then lost the habit. Again, I did morning pages while reading "Vein of Gold"...and dropped the habit. And something here I do not understand. I LOVE doing morning pages, and yet, I keep dropping this activity that I love? What is up with that?

Doing morning pages is a total brain bath. I write everything down. From thinking that the journal I am writing in is 'larger' than most notebooks and maybe a page and a half is the same as three other sorts of pages... LOL. To wondering which bill to pay...to hoping that the next art piece will come together like I see it in my head. I yell at others and myself. I write about when I stop writing to feed the stray cat. I comment on the weather. Anything goes. Anything. It is freeing and enlightening.

Writing my morning pages gets SO MUCH out of my head. Morning pages burns off the crap that seems insistent on building up...and, the best part...morning pages always results in at least, AT LEAST, one nugget of amazing truth.

Yes. Why would I walk away from this delicious habit?
We have received several emails of people thanking us for making this short, clear and concise edu-vid on one of the processes used by metalsmiths. It has received 4.5 stars!

I thought it would be a good time to do a re-run! Enjoy!

What do you wish for this summer?

And my mind goes on overdrive. Wave after wave of ideas and possibilities. Desires, dreams and needs. Yes, but what do I wish for this summer?

I had heard about High Hand, but had never been. So, on the hottest day in the area thus far, Josh and I headed out to check out the scene. Sometimes it is good to know what you are getting involved in, before the involvement!

We LOVED it there.

If you go to High Hand - you can plan on spending a lot of time there.

High Hand offers the Nursery (from their web site): "High Hand Nursery offers a unique shopping experience. Tour our greenhouse, the home of High Hand grown plants. Unwind in a world of unusual plants, pottery and inspiring garden art. Relax next to the koi ponds and wander through uniquely landscaped venues. High Hand Nursery also offers a full range of landscape services.

The Conservatory: "Purveyors of hand grown, hand crafted cuisine, the conservatory offers brunch, lunch and dinner derived from the finest flavors Placer County offers, including fresh grown produce from our own garden. Located on the grounds of the historic High Hand fruit sheds, this inspired conservatory offers a unique dining experience."

The Fruit Sheds - from the art gallery to the candle shop...there are plenty of places to explore and shop!

Here are some pictures from our adventure!

Like this druzy. She needed some work.

I loved the piece, but I think that her little "kick" there on the right seemed not right to many people. I've hung on to that "kick" for several years... ARTIST'S CHOICE!!! I have this thing for not quite making things symmetrical.

However, after all these years I took another look at her and yes, the "kick" bothered me...

Black Druzy with fused silver and gold. With a kick.

I took another look at the design...blocking out the playful "kick"...

Better...nice balance!

I gathered up my tools...from my super-sonic Walmart glasses for magnification...and other traditional smithing tools...

Marked the piece with the Sharpie and used the jeweler's saw to take out the "kick..."
Some buffing, polishing and a nice warm bath in soapy water (best way to clean a druzy...)
This means that fire/heating is not used for joining metals. Many metalsmiths have a love/hate relationship with cold connections. Some cold connections are easy. You make a hole in each piece of metal that you want to put together and then just run a material like wire, or leather, around and around. One can also use tiny screws and nuts. Rivets and eyelets may be the most commonly used by metal workers.

This wall art has cold connections all over it. From the wire holding the opal in place to the leather holding two large pieces of copper in place. ("Grandmother's Medicine Bag" by Lisa Kewish)

Another form of cold connection vexes many a metalsmith. Rivets. This means that a wire is fitted between two holes and the size of the holes must be just right. If the holes aren't the right size, the entire process fails and you have to start over. Bonus points, the wire you are using is about the size of this "l" !!! Ok, maybe a tad longer and a bit rounder.

There IS a rivet in there somewhere. On the right. The tiny silver circle. That is a rivet holding a bezel with a stone in place! (Lisa's class project on connecting with rivets)

And then there are eyelets. Eyelets are basically metal tubes that are round and finished around the edge.
Two bands, four artists, drummers and dancers...One of the best "opening night" art parties I have experienced!
Kewish Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14621942681887791495noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-46786977056075740.post-36558541283793143852012-06-02T18:47:00.001-07:002012-06-02T18:47:13.572-07:00Now THIS is an Art Show!"Art Shows" these days are iffy. Many shows are labeled as art shows and one may find a handful of artists surrounded by buy and sell vendors (or "bs" vendors as some call it...). So, I usually approach an art show with doubts and low expectations.

HOWEVER...
I was delighted and inspired by the work at the Art Fiesta at Town and Country (click here to find out more). Yes, actual artists and real art. Work that started my own creative soul panting and longing to get back in the studio...

While I will not post pictures of another artist's work, I am going to post a series of links to several artists that are at this show.

I would HIGHLY encourage you to check these links out and better yet, go to the art show...you only have tomorrow (June 3) to see this work...then you will have to wait until next year!

Jewelry By North (click here).
North does lost wax cast custom wearable art made in sterling silver. She has some new pieces that made my jaw drop. GORGEOUS! (and yes, North, and her wife Sharon, are friends of ours...) :)

Kathryn Finn (click here).
Kathryn makes porcelain adornments that are lovely. After my short experimentation with cold porcelain...I can DEEPLY appreciate the work that Kathryn does.

Gini Crepps Mitchell (click here).
Gini's collage work is not shown on her web page. But WOW on her collage work. So much energy and fun and scrumptious layers of stuff. We had a fun time visiting with her and, her booth partner

Bobbie Pilliard (click here).
It doesn't appear that she has a website...but we did have a great conversation about High Hand and how it was her summer job for several years. I just saw that she participated in KVIE's Art Auction 2011 with this picture that I want... "Here's Lookin at Ya"

Ted & Nat Groves
No website...Ted does fused dichroic glass and Nat does beading. The dichroic glass is amazing. I now have my own piece of Ted & Nat Groves dichroic glass. He does something to create dimensions in the glass that are mesmerizing.

Lary McKee (click here).
I adore Lary and love his art. Period.

Find time, get out, support, go see real art and talk to the artists. It makes for an amazing day!

Cheers!

My metalsmithing instructor once said to me, “You are so
amazingly creative. It oozes from you. You could shoot off in 500 different
directions and be successful at any of them.

That is quite the compliment from a master jewelry artist.
However…

I’ve been watching “Fashion Star” and while I’m not all that
about the mentors – watching the evolution of up-and-coming fashion designers
and the buyers, has me fascinated. The buyers are reps from H&M, Macy’s and
Saks Fifth Avenue.
I take mental notes every time they give advice.

The main advice – “Be able to reach multi-levels of buyers.
Design clothing for any occasion and be able to dress any body.” And always,
“You want us to be able to RECOGNIZE your work.”

Multi buyers and bodies…any occasion…RECOGNIZABLE.

Being recognizable and shooting off in 500 directions creates
a battle in my head.

My art tends to have an“organic” look. Whereas, Josh’s
work is clean and precise – I tend to just allow things to flow out side the
lines, allow things to melt where I don’t think I want meltage (my own
technical word) and let colors and flow run at will. I allow the piece of jewelry be art. We use the line "Bold and Unique" because it gives us a lot of room to create.

I can hear one former classmate clearly, “Lisa, you are
still searching for your voice…”

Isn’t an artist supposed to evolve? Isn’t an artist someone
who has a vision and doesn’t sleep or eat until the vision is in her hand and
she is pleased with the final result? Or if not pleased, then back to the
studio to learn a little more about how to make things work?

“Recognizable.”

I find myself rebelling against that. But then I do that in
my personal life too…just when you may think you have me figured out, I will go and do something completely "unrecognizable." ("What? I thought you just liked to sit around and have deep discussions about the meaning of life...and there you are dancing wildly in the streets...")

Flighty? No. Choosing to live a full life and explore all my
500 directions? Yes.

Many argue that one needs to DO ONE THING AND BECOME A
MASTER AT THAT ONE THING…

I say: Live your Self fully and have fun with all your 500

Took out some tabs and streamlined. To view completed work, just click on the "Gallery" tab! I will add tabs and work when it's all ready. I realized how annoying "page in progress" notes are...all pages now have information in them. :)

While we saturated Facebook with our excitement over our free media exposure (print and tele)...I realized that saving all this on the blog would be a way of "scrap booking" all this great energy! So here it is!

What is the first creative moment you remember?

I remember writing a play that I tried to get the other kids in my mom's daycare to perform. I think it had about eight lines. "Prince April Saves the Monster." I am still perplexed as to why I named a Prince "April"...? Or did I mean Princess? I do not know. I just remember the writing, producing and directing. This process iIncluded trying to get a three year old girl to remember her lines, and to keep her older brother focused on what he was supposed to do. I attempted - it failed.

But the "fun" was in the attempt.

My greatest fear is that I may run out of energy to keep making attempts.Kewish Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14621942681887791495noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-46786977056075740.post-82834129540439293842012-01-02T20:37:00.000-08:002012-01-02T20:43:49.019-08:00Photo Ramblin' - New Year's Eve 2011

January 2011
Like most artists...January is the Great Black-Out time. Staying quiet and resting is the game plan. Maybe some cleaning and organizing in the studio...nothing is in my calendar for January 2011!

I gave myself a challenge to do a "Piece a Week"...I did fairly well with that until Apple Hill hit! At that point I was making leaves, leaves and more leaves.

February 2011
Still quiet...but a lot was stirring!

March 2011
We were the featured artists at Arareity! Even had a radio ad that mentioned "Kewish Designs." That created a lot of excitement! It was fun to walk into parties and have people say, "Hey! I heard about you on the radio!" We had a fun evening!

And then...I started running again...one particular day I was having a GREAT run...except I tripped...fell...bounced and slidddddddddddddddddddd. I was at the furthest point out from the house...so...left arm, hands and knees bloody and swelling...I hobbled back the two miles to get back home. And then sat down covered in ice packs. I was unable to do any studio work for the rest of the month.

April 2011
Studio work...to the best of our ability!

May 2011
Fire and Rain Gallery opened up a 2nd store on Sutter Street. We had pieces in both locations!
The end of May (Memorial Day weekend), we began our Tahoe shows...it SNOWED that weekend. Horrible snowy, windy weather. bleh.

June and July 2011 - Tahoe every weekend. The 17-day run from July 1 through the 17th. Not much action for us up in Tahoe. We had to seriously think about that commitment. Frankly, we were losing money and our spirits were really, really down. We did not feel the love. We hung in there. At the last minute we contacted Mendocino's "Art in the Garden" organizer..."we know we are late, but can we still get in?" They were THRILLED to hear from us and were delighted that we wanted to do the show. So...

August 2011
A great kick-off to August by doing the "Art in the Gardens" show at Mendocino's Botanical Gardens! We did well and that helped to boost our spirits. We did one more weekend up at Tahoe and then got ready for...

September - December 2011
High Hill Ranch/Apple Hill!!! What an amazing experience that was! We did very well...almost too well at times. We were working seven days a week at the Ranch, then coming home and doing studio time. Because we make each piece, one at a time...it, well, TAKES TIME! We were so busy in fact...that the calendar on our wall is STILL on September!
Even with all THAT going on - we added a trunk show at Vintners, and a show at Gold Hill Winery!

Our big winners were wire wrap rings, hearts, leaves and the Key to Self. I (Lisa) am sold out of my artsy pieces. I believe that Josh's silver flower pendants have sold...except for one with an opal.

Still available!

We made a conscious choice to not do so many street fairs this past year...it just isn't our scene.
We also made a conscious choice to get into a few more galleries and stores. For now we are in Fire and Rain, PeraDice, Vintner's and Journey. We pulled out of Arareity and The Market Place.

In between everything else we did a few Mid-Town Bazaars and Ladies Night at Vintner's.

Looking forward we are thinking about wholesale...and finding some stores in Berkeley and San Francisco that would carry our work. We will apply for "Art in the Gardens" for August 2012 and we will be at High Hill Ranch next September - December. Right now as I write this, I am aware of an approaching deadline for a show in El Dorado Hills in May that we are pondering... yikes! In March we are going to jury in for the St. John Craft Fair in December. That show is HUGE.

We are also trying to figure out ways to introduce and sell our other creative work...Josh's drawings and paintings and my photography. I still have a few other creative ideas that need to get out of my head!!

It has been a splendid year and we thank you all for being a part of it! I have a feeling that some amazing things are going to happen in 2012...because they have already been set in motion! :)
